The school has been called the "Eton of India" since its foundation. The Board of Governors and the Principal, assisted by his academic and administrative staff, manage the institute.

The school prepares boys for secondary school certificate exam (class 10) and senior secondary school certificate exam (class 12) conducted by the Central Board of secondary education (CBSE) New Delhi.

The school offers all three major streams viz. science, commerce and humanities.

Mayo College is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The school comprises of classes IV to XII.

The academic year is from July to April. It is divided into two terms:

Autumn term: from the middle of July to early December.
Spring term: from the middle of January to the end of April/beginning of May.

Entrance Test for admission to Mayo College is held in the 3rd/4th week of November every year at various centers in India.

Tests can also be arranged overseas through the Indian Embassy in the respective country.

The test comprises English, Hindi and Mathematics to test the age specific skills in the subjects.

Age stipulations are strictly observed and the parent is responsible for compliance as required.

The school organizes a large number of educational trips, camps, sight scene tours treks and expeditions.

Being a boarding school primarily the school has a well-developed structured educational and co-curricular programme.

The campus is self-sufficient and has all the required facilities required.
